Pantry Inventory Checklist

A simple pantry inventory checklist for planning dinners from what you already have and avoiding duplicate grocery purchases.

For pantry cooking articles, kitchen organization guides, and budget-friendly meal planning resources.

Core pantry categories

  • Grains and starches: rice, pasta, oats, tortillas, couscous, potatoes.
  • Canned and jarred foods: tomatoes, beans, lentils, coconut milk, broth, sauces.
  • Flavor builders: oils, vinegars, soy sauce, mustard, hot sauce, curry paste, salsa.
  • Spices and dried herbs: salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, thyme, chili powder.
  • Backup proteins: canned tuna, beans, lentils, frozen chicken, tofu, eggs, nut butter.

Use-first checks

  • Write down three ingredients that should be used this week.
  • Pair each use-first item with a saved recipe, cooking method, or pantry meal idea.
  • Check open jars and partial packages before buying replacements.
  • Plan one pantry meal before adding new groceries.

Keep the inventory useful

  • Do a quick pantry check before grocery day, not after shopping.
  • Keep frequently used staples visible and grouped by how you cook.
  • Add low-running items to the grocery list as soon as you notice them.
  • Remove expired or stale items during a monthly reset.
